April 19 - still on the day tour of istanbul..
Our guide took us to the 2 most famous mosques of the city which was the Blue Mosque and the Ayasofya. By the end of the day we got used to taking off our shoes and carrying them in thin plastic bags while walking inside the mosques.
I was most impressed by the ayasofia. The story goes, it was originally a christian church built around the 5th century with beautiful gold mosaics on the walls and ceilings. It was a church for 916 yrs before the city was taken over by turks and the sultan mehmet turned it into a mosque. He had the foresight to not destroy the beautiful mosaics and instead plastered over it.
